Directors Meeting - Past Minutes November 9, 2004 The WSSA Board of Directors held a meeting on November 9, 2004 at the Breaktime Sports Bar. Ron Sullivan was absent. The meeting was called to order by President Ken Denne at 1:20 PM.
The meeting format was changed to address the Treasurer’s Report first. With all bills paid at the present time, we have a checkbook total of $7300.08 with league balance of $3668.20 and the total of all team balances $3631.88. The team balances are as follows: Legends $1278.13, Kohl’s $797.33, Patriots $287.19, Navigators $100.84, Roosters $626.07, Investors $235.17, Eagles $184.73 and Osteos $122.42. George Scelzi is resigning as Treasurer and the board appointed Mike Fleming as interim Treasurer until the January 2005 General Membership Meeting. Cards were received from the Richard Shields family and from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for a $150.00 donation given in memory of Warren Smith.
Commissioner’s Report: · Phil sent a letter to Mayor Spence Broadhurst about the need for more adult softball fields. The answer was basically no revenue for fields and to persue this issue with the New Hanover County officials. · Schedule 2005 – Start March 22 instead of April 1 and play double headers until June 28 when we will play single games until the end of the season August 30. This will provide plenty of practice before the State Games in Raleigh. The discussion on the proposed schedule centered on players who travel a great distance to play and wouldn’t want to play only one game. Also some players would like a break, others don’t want a break.
The meeting was opened for comments and discussion from the floor. Open Discussion: · Didn’t like the two half season concept · City leagues take a break between summer and fall leagues-we should too · Need to have a draft due to stacked teams · Coastal Division needs to look at the neighborhood team concept · Supper Optimist Club invites us to send a league representative to their next meeting in order to see how they may help our league. · Phil is looking at another field at Veteran’s Park for our use · Placement of new players · Need an alternate for the Coastal Division player representatives · What equipment will be legal at the National Games in 2005?
New Business: · League Dues - Phil Rose suggested raising the league dues to $70.00 per player and he presented anticipated expenditures for 2005. The increase is mainly due to having umpires for every game in 2005. (We only had umpires for half of 2004) - Joe Seme suggested that this information be presented at the January 2005 General Membership Meeting and let the players decide. - A poll of the players at the meeting showed everyone wanted to have umpires. The consensus of the board based on this input was that in order to have umpires for every game the league dues will have to be raised. - A motion was made and seconded to raise the league dues to $70.00 An amendment was made to the motion to check the availability of the umpires before approving the increase of league dues. The amendment was approved 8-0 and the motion with the amendment was approved 8-0 · Elections: The offices of Vice-President, Treasurer and one Player representative from each division are up for election this year. Nominations from the floor at the January 2005 General Membership Meeting will be taken to fill these positions.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
