Directors Meeting - Past Minutes May 28, 2002 A meeting of the WSSA Board of Officers was held on May 28, 2002 at the Myrtle Grove Library. In attendance were Ken Denne, Russ Puckett, Mike Abernathy,George Rose, Phil Rose, Joe Seme, Harry Rowe, Phil Kaufman, Rick Mongero and Chip Krieger. President Ken Denne called the meeting to order at 9:02 AM and distributed a meeting agenda. Minutes of last month’s meeting were approved. During the team evaluation discussions, Phil Kaufman made a motion that: The team quarterly evaluations will be based on team head count first. After team head count parity is achieved for all teams, player placement will revert to the draft by status of league standings. This motion was passed 7-0 with one abstention. Phil Rose amended this motion to read that: The placement of an impact player will be by the Board based on the league standings. The amended motion was approved 8-0. With the amendment and motion, the following moves were made: Kohl’s picked Bill Marnie, Jerry Cimone, Julius Pellom and Jim Walker. Legends picked Andy O’Flaherty and Walt Chmielenski. Also Kohl’s loses Lou Cardamone to the Roosters (Sponsor related) With these moves the league achieves team head count parity. Chip Krieger presented a proposal for the reorganization of the Board of Officers. He suggested a player's board who will present a prepared agenda and proposals to an executive board. This will greatly reduce the Board's meeting times. The executive board will have the voting privileges. The board will consider this proposal at a later date. Russ Puckett presented the Treasurer’s report. He stated the league is in good financial shape, but he did caution around the uncertainty of the City of Wilmington with their budget (subsidizing the umpire fees). Phil Rose stated that he would like to see the league pay the players fees for the state and national games. The Board approved a motion that the cut off date for paying League fees will be June 15, 2002. Phil Rose in the Commissioners Report stated that he has sent a letter to the Supt. of Wilmington Parks and Recreation about the metal fence at Ogden Park. Nothing has been resolved as yet. Phil stated that only four teams have gone out and secured new sponsors for the league. Special appreciation to JIM KELLY for his efforts. Also Phil emphasized that the managers need to communicate ROMEO to their teams. New Business Several items of concern were discussed including players losing interest in playing and recommendations that all players should play at least 7 innings in a doubleheader. Several managers stated that the 7 innings should include playing defense verses just being a designated hitter. Other discussion centered on the rosters of the teams going to the State games. We want to take the strongest teams in each age bracket because these games are qualifying games for the National Games in Virginia in 2003. A picnic committee of Ken Denne, George Rose and Marty Plage was appointed to make plans for a league picnic.
