Special Meeting
This was a special meeting called by President Harry Rowe to address the occasional forfeitures in the Atlantic Division and lack of player participation by some teams. The apparent reasons for this are:
1) Injuries, 2) Travel, 3) Poor economy forcing players back to work and less leisure time, and
4) Skilled players electing to move to the new baseball league.

The amount of part time players on each of the teams in the Atlantic Division is 4 on the Terminators, 6 on the Eagles, 3 on the Osteos and 2 on the Roosters. The Eagles seem to have had the most difficulty in fielding enough players on game day.

Harry asked the following question, “How can the League remedy the situation at this stage of the season?” The answers proposed were:

  1. Schedule both games of the Atlantic Division in the same location. If both games can be played at Robert Strange on fields #1 & #3, then players will more easily be able to borrow players from the various teams should they be short.
  2. Extra players that have come out since the season started should be assigned to the Atlantic Division.

The next question was How to prevent the same from happening next year? Some suggestions were

  1. Let the part time or not fully committed players be “floaters”. They will not be assigned a team, but will be available to play on any team with a phone call.
  2. Start Senior Softball at age 60 rather than 53. Most of the teams in North Carolina start Senior Softball at age 60 since most men in their 50’s are not yet retired or have time.
  3. The new Olsen Park will with five fields will help bring the league together and borrowing of players between teams easier.

A possible re-organization of the League for next year was discussed. Among the possible ideas for next year were:

  1. Leave the League as it is with the present age categories and teams, 6 in the Coastal & 4 in the Atlantic Division.
  2. Merge the League back together with 10 total teams and player assigned regardless of age.
  3. Divide the League by age, for example, >68 years to play in the Coastal Division and those <68  will play in the Atlantic Division with possibly 6 teams being in the younger Atlantic Division and 4 teams in the older Coastal Division.

Harry announced the resignation of Jay Harrington who briefly had accepted the presidency of the Atlantic Division. Harry asked the Atlantic managers to each propose a candidate from their respective teams who might be willing to serve as Atlantic Division President. The managers held a brief meeting and selected Rick Mongero as their only candidate. Mike Abernathy moved that the Board accept Rick as the Atlantic Division President, Mike Fleming seconded the motion, and it was passed unanimously. The Board welcomed Rick Mongero as the new President of the Atlantic Division.

The next meeting of the Board will be on Wed., August 18 at 3:00 PM at Covil Estates Clubhouse.

There being no further business. The meeting was adjourned at 4:55 PM.
