Directors Meeting - Past Minutes January 31, 2007 Attending: Joe Seme, Ron Sullivan, George Wesoloski, Mike Fleming, Gerry Paige, Phil Rose and approximately 70 softball members. President Joe Seme called the meeting to order at 11:05 AM. Dwight Crainshaw gave an opening prayer. Joe introduced the Board Members and the new players were recognized giving their name and hometown. Minutes of the previous Board meeting were corrected by Mike Abernathy to read that the County will no longer line the fields at Veterans and Ogden. The City will continue to line the fields at Empie Park. With this correction the minutes were approved as posted on the website.
President’s Report – Joe spoke of the new softball complex and then introduced John Rancke. John Ranche is Recreation Supervisor for Wilmington Parks and Recreation. He gave an update on the softball complex being planned and resulting from the success of the recent bond referendum. The complex will cover 87 acres and be located near the airport and Highway 40. In the plan there will be four softball fields and one baseball field. The emphasis will be on drainage, lights and fences. The facility may be finished toward the end of 2008. The land has already been acquired. For information John can be contacted at (910)343-3682. Joe introduced Dr. Eric McGraw a local chiropractor who gave a brief explanation about his new Wilmington practice and specialty in treating muscle injuries.
Treasurer’s Report – Mike Fleming reported on the team balances as follows:
Budget 2007 – The budget for 2007 was displayed, discussed and accepted. Mike Abernathy felt the increase in annual fees has increased too fast. Eight years ago the annual fee was $25 and now it has reached $75. Jerry Dowling questioned the reason for wanting to spend more on better umpires. Bob Faehner felt that umpires are not needed at all. Harry Rowe questioned why the League is not remitting a portion of the annual dues to the teams as had been agreed by the Board sometime ago.
Commissioner’s Report – Sponsor Program – Commissioner Phil Rose indicated the sponsor program is going down and few are requesting new financial sponsors. Schedule for 2007 – Phil indicated that games will be played twice per week but may be played on Tues., Wed., or Thurs. The season will run from April 17 to Oct. 10. A summer break will occur from June 26 through Aug. 3. New Team & Player Assignments – Phil announced that player assignments will be decided following a meeting of team managers in February following an assessment of the number of new players and players moving up to the Coastal Division. National Teams – Mike Abernathy spoke of the 60 to 64 team going to the National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky while Phil Rose spoke of the over 70 team also representing Wilmington at the National Tournament. The 2009 National Tournament will be in San Francisco and Houston in 2011. Rules Committee Report – Ken Denne spoke of the three new rules regarding: 1) Home team dugout designated as the dugout along the first base line, 2) Heat rule meaning the home team decides the format to shorten the first game while the visiting team decides the format of the second game, 3) Forfeit rule means the two team managers may agree on game postponements provide no obligation has been incurred to the umpires and the games may be rescheduled if possible.
Old Business – None
New Business – Election of Officers – Harry Rowe, Don Johnson and John Forte were nominated for VP. A hand vote was taken and Harry was elected. Mike Fleming was nominated for a second term as treasurer and was elected by acclimation. A collection was taken for Ed Kirton who lost all his possessions in a recent fire. A total of $525 was collected and Phil Rose will arrange to send Ed a check. Joe Seme announced the formation of a “wooden baseball bat” league and anyone interested should contact him. No further business John Forte moved to close the meeting and Harry Rowe seconded it. The meeting was adjourned at 12:15 PM. Respectfully, George Wesoloski, Secretary
