DO YOU KNOW THE RULES...? The batter hits a line drive toward 3rd base. The ball looks like it may go foul. The 3rd baseman, standing in fair territory tries to catch the ball. The ball hits his glove and goes foul. Is it a fair or foul ball....? Rule: The position of the fielder's body or feet, have absolutely nothing to do with judging whether a ball is fair or foul. The judgement is based solely upon the relationship between the BALL and the LINE at the moment the fielder touches the ball, or the moment the ball touches the ground. In this case, it was a foul ball regardless of having touched the ball while standing within the playing field. REMEMBERING GLEN MILLS, (1944 - 2009)
Glen MIlls started in Senior Softball in 2000 with the Eagles. When the league divided into two divisions, Glen moved onto the Investors where he played his traditional role as a catcher. One of his last roles was as catcher on the Wilmington Senior Softball State Championship (60 to 64) team. Glen loved sports, baseball in particular. He played little league, Pony League, American Legion, High School, UNCW and even was invited to try out with the LA Dodgers. He'll be remembered for his constant smile and jovial demeanor. Note the catcher instinct in his picture above signalling for a fast ball. Rest in peace Glen. R.O.M.E.O. LUNCHEON The response to the romeo luncheon was very POOR. Only 6 player and myself showed up. The manager was very disappointed. The last time we had lunch there was in April and only 9 of us showed up I emailed everyone who has an email ( 160 ) to remind them. I am afraid if that kind of response keeps up we will lose them as a League sponsor and we will have to raise our League Fee to make up for it. SPORT COMPLEX DEDICATION Again we had a very poor response. only myself, George Scelzi and Bob Kroehler showed up. Our mayor Bill Saffo, praised the senior softball players for their hard work that enabled the Bond Referandum to be passed. several of us showed up at the meetings that were held. HEAT STRESS
(Rule 5.3 Game Length). "During the season, when there is extremely hot weather, the two teams may elect to shorten the games to 5 innings or use the 1 and 1 count, or both. Home team makes the decision on the first game, while the Visiting team makes the decision on the second game." Note that no mention is made of temperature. SORRY GUYS...NO ALCOHOL Recently some players were sharing a few beers in the parking lot at Empie after their game. A city patrol car was nearby and observed them. We were reminded that no alcohol is allowed in City or County Parks. It's possible Senior Softball could lose their permit should the practice continue. So... observe the rules and drink responsibly. ROSTERS The rosters of all the teams have been updated as per the recent draft of players. Please check your team roster. Should any change in your phone or e-mail contact Phil Rose.
